About Tile of America

Tile work built to last.

Tile of America is a licensed tile contractor based at 15 Adams Rd in West Yarmouth. Owner Marco Aurélio and his crew install bathroom, shower, kitchen, backsplash, and floor tile throughout Cape Cod. Every installation includes a one-year written workmanship warranty. In Truro that means a lot of houses that stand empty and unheated through the winter, which is the hardest test a tiled shower gets.

Tile Work for Truro Homes

Tile and Shower Work We Do in Truro

Truro is the least built-up town on the Cape, and its housing splits two ways. There are antique Capes and farmhouses in the hollows, and there are the architect-designed summer houses out toward the dunes, many of them on piers rather than a full foundation. A large share of both sit closed and unheated from October to May. Tile of America looks at the structure and how the house is used before quoting, because a seasonal house moves through the year in a way a year-round one does not.

Tile of America evaluates the subfloor condition, moisture exposure, and finish height requirements before any material is ordered. Every installation is built on substrates and waterproofing methods suited to the actual conditions of the home, not a standard template.

Waterproofing First

What Makes a Shower in a Truro Home Different From Any Other Job?

Most Truro houses go cold and empty for months at a time, and that cycle is what finds the weak spot in a shower.

A House That Sits Empty Tests the Waterproofing, Not the Tile

Two kinds of house dominate here and neither one was built with ceramic in mind. In the hollows there are antique Capes and farmhouses standing on their original framing. Out toward the dunes there are the light-built summer houses, a good number of them carried on piers instead of a full foundation.

What separates Truro from a year-round town is the temperature swing. A house kept at fifty degrees through the winter, or kept at nothing at all, and then brought up to summer temperature in June, travels through a far wider range than a house someone lives in. Every joint in the assembly takes that journey twice a year.

The part that matters is that no one is standing in the room when it starts to go wrong. A year-round homeowner notices a dark grout line or a soft spot within weeks. In a closed house the same leak runs quietly from September until someone opens the door in May, and by then the question is no longer about tile.

So we build for the absence rather than for the shower. Subfloor deflection and framing are checked before a Truro project is quoted, the shower goes on Schluter Kerdi-Board, which is waterproof through the panel itself, and a bonded membrane is detailed over the seams, corners and curb on top of that. Two layers, because only one of them has to hold while the house is empty.

A shower in a seasonal house is only as good as the layer nobody is there to check on.

Does Tile Work in Truro Need a Permit?

Permit requirements in Truro depend on the scope of the project, particularly when the work involves structural changes, plumbing relocation, or other regulated construction activity.

Know What the Project Involves Before Construction Starts

Replacing tile on a substrate that is already sound is finish work. Nothing structural moves, and it does not normally need a permit.

The line gets crossed as soon as a drain shifts, framing is opened, or plumbing is relocated, which describes most full shower rebuilds. The Truro Building Department decides that case by case, and it is a short conversation rather than a long one.

On historic review, Truro is simpler than its neighbours. There is a Historical Commission, but no local historic district applying design review to private houses, so an interior bathroom raises no question at all. What does come up here is the National Seashore, which takes in a large share of the town and can bear on exterior and septic work. It has no say over a tiled shower, and the department will tell you plainly which side of that line a wider remodel sits on.

Check the scope with the Building Department before anything is opened up. We would rather have that answer in hand on day one than find it halfway through.

Permits for this work are issued by the Truro Building Department, and the permit is pulled before the work starts rather than after.

What goes under the tile in a Truro home, and why it decides everything

Built Under the Finish

Two bids on the same Truro bathroom can read almost identically and describe completely different work, because the part that decides the outcome is buried before the tile arrives. Antique framing in the hollows and light summer construction out on the dunes both sit short of what ceramic and stone want underneath them, and an unoccupied house that freezes and thaws asks more of the assembly than a lived-in one ever does.

None of this is the big number on the estimate. It is simply the part that decides whether you are looking at the same shower in ten years or paying for it twice.

Built Under the Finish The Installation Starts Behind the Tile

Schluter Kerdi-Board

A foam-core panel carrying bonded waterproofing fleece. The waterproofing is the board, not a coating brushed onto cement board behind it, which is the distinction that matters in a house standing cold and unvisited from October to May.

Premium wet-area system

We waterproof twice

The panel is already waterproof through its core. A bonded Kerdi membrane then goes over every seam, corner and curb on top of it. One weak point cannot reach the framing on its own, and in an empty house that redundancy is the only thing watching the shower.

Two independent layers

Subfloor inspection

Deflection, levelness, framing condition, self-leveling and finish height against the adjoining floor, all read on site before a panel is cut. In Truro we look under the floor as well, because a pier foundation or an open crawlspace changes the answer.

Clear Answers Before Work Begins

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about tile installation, repairs, preparation, service areas, finishing standards, and licensing across Cape Cod.

What does tile work cost in Truro?

+

Shower tile runs $18 to $35 per square foot installed, bathroom floor and wall tile $10 to $25, and a kitchen backsplash $15 to $40. A full tiled shower usually lands between $3,000 and $9,000. Truro jobs sometimes carry extra preparation where a floor sits over an unheated crawlspace or a pier foundation, which is why the figure is set after we measure.

Do I need a permit for tile work in Truro?

+

Tile set over sound existing substrate generally does not. A permit is required from the Truro Building Department once the work touches plumbing, moves a drain, or opens framing, which covers most shower rebuilds. We pull it before work starts and the number goes on your paperwork.

The house is closed up all winter. Does that change anything?

+

It changes what we build behind the tile. A house held at fifty degrees or left unheated moves more through the year than a year-round home, and nobody is there to notice the first drip. So the membrane and how it is detailed at the corners, curb and niche matter more here, and we would rather over-build that layer than come back to replace framing. If you want the water shut off between visits, tell us and we will set the job up for it.

Can you work around a summer rental calendar?

+

Yes, and in Truro that is usually the whole conversation. We book shower and floor work for the shoulder seasons and hold firm end dates when a rental calendar or an arrival depends on it. Tell us the date the house has to be ready and we will say plainly whether the scope fits before you commit.

Do you install natural stone and large-format tile?

+

Yes. Both ask more of the preparation than standard ceramic. Natural stone needs the right setting material and sealing, and some stone will show a reaction to the wrong cleaner for the rest of its life. Large-format tile needs a floor flat within a tight tolerance or the corners lip. We will tell you what your floor needs before you choose the material, not after.

How long will the bathroom be out of use?

+

One to two weeks for a standard shower rebuild, longer where stone or a complex layout is involved. Waterproofing has to cure before tile is set, which cannot be compressed. The day-by-day sequence is in writing before we start.

Is Tile of America licensed to do this work in Massachusetts?

+

Yes. Tile of America is registered as a Home Improvement Contractor with the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs under HIC #220711, and work is supervised under Construction Supervisor License #CS-123907. Both are public records you can look up on mass.gov before hiring anyone, and we encourage it.
