Built for Cape Cod

Why do Cape Cod showers fail, and how does a good contractor prevent it?

Most shower failures begin behind the tile. Tile of America builds on Schluter KERDI waterproofing over Kerdi-Board and GoBoard panels, then adds a liquid membrane underneath as a second independent layer.

Before quoting, we check floor level, soft spots, framing bellies, and the self-leveling the substrate needs. A shower installed over a compromised subfloor will move, crack grout, and eventually stress waterproofing seals.

The board costs roughly five times more than standard cement board, and the second layer is not required by the manufacturer. We use both because coastal humidity and concealed wet areas leave no room for guesswork.

Custom Tile Showers

What makes a custom tile shower built for coastal conditions different?

A coastal shower needs waterproofing designed for continuous humidity exposure, seasonal temperature swings, and small movements in the substrate, not only splash resistance.

Kerdi-Board and GoBoard do not absorb moisture like cement board. KERDI creates a continuous waterproof layer at the surface, while the liquid membrane underneath adds redundancy.

Changes of plane are caulked rather than grouted because those joints move. The protection is hidden when the tile is complete. That is exactly where it should be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Tile of America

Clear answers about tile services, estimates, preparation, warranties, tile removal, and service coverage throughout Cape Cod.

What tile services does Tile of America offer in West Yarmouth?

Tile of America installs bathroom tile, kitchen tile, floor tile, shower tile, backsplash tile, and tile removal across West Yarmouth and the Cape Cod peninsula. Each service begins with an in-person assessment of the subfloor and structure before any quote is issued, so the scope is confirmed against what the space actually needs rather than a generic estimate.

How does Tile of America decide what to quote before starting a job?

Before issuing any quote, Tile of America inspects the structure: floor level, framing bellies, and what subfloor preparation the space requires. Finish height is set so new tile lands flush with adjacent flooring, avoiding threshold strips. Every tile is installed with levelers to eliminate lippage. That assessment happens before a number is put on paper.

What warranty comes with a tile installation from Tile of America?

Tile of America provides a one-year written warranty on every installation, delivered in writing before work begins. It covers water leaks in showers and wet areas, tile that comes loose or goes hollow, and grout that cracks or separates. It does not cover grout discoloration from cleaning products, impact damage, structural movement by others, or normal wear on sealant and caulk lines.

Do older Cape Cod homes need extra subfloor work before tile is installed?

Most West Yarmouth housing stock dates to the 1970s and 1980s, and homes of that era commonly have subfloor irregularities that must be corrected before tile is set. Tile of America checks for out-of-level floors and framing bellies during the pre-quote inspection and prices self-leveling work into the job rather than discovering it mid-installation, which is when corrections become disruptive and expensive.

Which areas on Cape Cod does Tile of America serve?

Tile of America serves the full Cape Cod peninsula from its base in West Yarmouth, covering Yarmouth, Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, Provincetown, Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville, Cotuit, Mashpee, Falmouth, Bourne, Sandwich, Sagamore, and Plymouth. Contact Tile of America for a free estimate on your Cape Cod project.

Does tile removal require its own preparation before new tile goes in?

Tile removal is a service Tile of America offers as a standalone scope, and the condition of what is underneath determines what comes next. Removing existing tile in a coastal home often reveals substrate damage from moisture intrusion, which must be addressed before any new installation begins. The pre-quote inspection identifies those conditions so nothing is discovered after demo is already done.

What should a homeowner do to prepare for a tile installation appointment?

Clearing the work area of personal items, furniture, and fixtures that can be removed in advance reduces the time spent on setup and keeps the project moving. Tile of America confirms the specific preparation needed for each job during the consultation, since bathroom and kitchen scopes have different access requirements and the subfloor inspection may identify additional steps before installation begins.

If grout cracks or a tile loosens after installation, what happens?

Under Tile of America's one-year written warranty, a cracked grout line or a loose tile triggers a return visit and repair at no charge, no argument, and no inspection fee. If the cause is unclear, the team comes in person to assess before any determination is made. The warranty covers workmanship; it does not cover damage from structural movement in the building or impact from outside the tile itself.
